The Narcissist

�"But you hate kiwi!" protests my girl. �How can anyone detest kiwi and then eat it so eagerly?" She is baffled. She is hurt. To some extent, she is even frightened to find herself with this kiwi-guzzling stranger.

How can I tell her that, in the absence of a self, there are no likes or dislikes, preferences, predictable behavior or characteristics? It is not possible to know the narcissist. There is no one there.

The narcissist was conditioned - from an early age of abuse and trauma - to expect the unexpected. Hers was a world in motion where (sometimes sadistically) capricious caretakers and peers often engaged in arbitrary behavior. She was trained to deny her true self and nurture a false one.

Having invented herself, the narcissist sees no problem in re-inventing that which she designed in the first place. The Narcissist is her own creator.�

Rapid adoption of those attributes which will garner acceptance and obedience from those who hold some comfort item desired, a concentration on the immediacy of now. Calculated self-categorizations such as �eclectic in my tastes� or claimed diagnoses that offer an edge in grudged explanations. Generic cover stories to explain absences, dissembling and ignoring of inquiries when they are made are the narcissist�s style. Brevity of history with only the briefest of the brush of legend to fill in those rather wide open spaces; as time passes the disdain for how easily those she targets learn to accept these avoidances begins to show in the role reversal which is trademark of this type of lover. Pleasured expressions without emotional backdrop are offered now only when something asked for is presented.

The ticked list of DSM-IV attributes are made, yes more than the three required for Antisocial Behavior Disorder and then the later subcategory notches in the handle of Narcissism (eating disorder yes, so critical to the Femaleness); only three to make it Malignant and two are known already. Thank god I ran.
