Overture

Musique de la jeune fille l'emballement

It is late a spring night on this semi-rural road; frogs and toads are just maturing from their high pitched castrati voices to their deeper basso profondo calls. The sky is clear with just a slight moisture thickened distortion and the evenings and darker parts now of this night remain cool while the daylight hours are growing heated and yellow with the closeness of the sun and this planets tilt and rotation.

The windows of the home we stand before are abundant, and each is painted white with burning internal light; no corner in this box creation is unlit day or night. What lives within has a reasoned fear of darkness, a learned obsession with shadow and what might lie within concealment. The single front entryway to this structure is painted in a shade of red enamel akin to that used for signaling approaching emergency or threats of a heated nature; it�s hanging and operating metal parts are flashing brass�d in color partially patina�d black in significant signal of the length of time this storage box has stood face forward to weather. There are other boxes, other man-made structures on this graveled rural road; they sit silent witness in their unlit darkness to what waits within our chosen venue. High above, the star spread of this shiny whirled galaxy, diamond like bejewel this spinning orb�s inky night.







The flaming door is sudden opened and crashes within as a small figure in black and gray ejects in exit at speed and with extremities in blurring motion; her species dominates this tiny world and they have evolved on blood and flesh and acceleration. Across untended soils and small plant life, while tiny creatures seek escape from foot fall�s extermination, she runs. No concern with conservation, of life, of lung, of energy or allowance of inertia she accelerates and curves before us onto graveled friction and bare clay surface. She is small and thin and compact and strong; at thirteen years no thought of reasoned cautions of trip of fall slow or halt her gait�s gain on time. Behind her now we hear insanities call in shrill and angered tones of hate and shadows fall on the box�s threshold, then the door of flame slams shut and stabs quiet night with splintered shout.

Hours later she is among her tender trees; she has touched some smooth barked young allowing her fingers to trace the name of her older lover. She has sung to a rough barked and knurled trunked elder of her love of this protected place�s wonder. She had removed her shoes and shed her light sweater folded it neatly and placed it beneath a cherry�s unblossomed limbs where new fruit dangles in small round invitation. The peaches also are in their bearing stage and she knows that within fast passing time she will hold and taste; their golden juice and soft furred shape delicious against her mouth and face. She wraps her arms and now lifting her legs she begins her climb into older wider apple limbs. In the morning she will wander the orchard, plucking moth sacks and with her small hands rake the older leaves from where roots drink. She is home in this safe place.
